It’s not about where or when you travel; it’s about how you do it. My travel experiences don’t typically involve private yachts, luxury hotels, or upscale restaurants. However, I firmly believe that my approach to travel allows me to fully immerse myself in both the natural beauty of the outdoors and the vibrant cultures of urban destinations.
One key distinction that has shaped my travel philosophy is the difference between being a tourist and being a traveler. To me, a tourist visits a new place, perhaps tries a local dish, but ultimately doesn’t fully engage with the local way of life. They are ‘on vacation’ and may indulge in the luxuries an area has to offer. There’s nothing wrong with being a tourist, but in my view, a traveler gains a deeper and richer experience from their journey.
A traveler embraces the unknown, delves into local traditions (always with respect), is comfortable with discomfort, and ultimately develops a newfound appreciation for the world as they explore it.
One of my favorite ways to travel is via a classic road trip. Grab the snacks, cue a playlist and hit the road. Slow travel, like by car or train, allows you to lessen your carbon-footprint, engage with the locals and see more of the area. A great way to engage with locals is through booking experiences like Airbnb Experiences. Some of my favorite memories while traveling have taken place not in grand museum halls but in the homes of locals, who always give the best recommendations. I also believe you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to make millions of memories (which is one way of saying, I’m on a budget).
These days, camping and outdoor adventure take up most of my time however, I’ve my fair share of jaunting across Europe. I will admit, traveling by train in Eastern Europe is one of my favorite ways to take in the scenery and avoid flying. I enjoy active travel and tend to fill my time with activities like hiking in the mountains, taking a city bike tour or following a walking guide.
When I’m not traveling, I try my best to be a tourist in my own town and romanticize my day-to-day life. In addition to my travel posts here on SunriserClub.com, you’ll discover other topics I’m passionate about. I’m still finding my groove, but I hope you’ll stay tuned.
