New York State and Niagara

I woke up to the sounds of the marina coming to life with early morning fisherman.

After heading northeast from Cuyahoga Valley towards Buffalo, New York we opted to spend the night at a harbor that allowed overnight camping. Part of the Overlanding experience is walking up in unexpected places.

Along the drive we stopped to hike to the Eternal Flame Falls. Here you can view a small grotto emitting natural gas which produces this everlasting flame. Be careful on the hike as the trail was slippery and we saw many people fall along the riverbed.

Despite the name, the flame does occasionally go out due to wind blowing water from the falls into the grotto. Hikers can relight the flame if it’s out.

Next item on the agenda was to visit Buffalo, New York. We grabbed a coffee, did some googling and located a food festival going on in downtown.

The Taste of Buffalo is a two day extravaganza with about 40 restaurants present. It was a great stop for two hungry travelers.

After we filled up on snacks, we made the quick drive to Niagara Falls. While Niagara is extremely touristy, the views make getting stuck in traffic worth it. We did not partake in any additional additional activities at Niagara, like the boat tours, since the prices were pretty steep. Although, we did wear parkas and get sprayed by the mist.

This is where the journey goes international. Passports in hand, we crossed over into Ontario, Canada. Since it was pretty late in the day at this point we opted stop and camp outside of Toronto, ON.

Our next stop includes Toronto and Rouge National Urban Park. Follow along to catch the next sunrise!
